Cuddling up with a Good Book

I was thinking about reading and why it was so hard for me to get through the Public Domain and easier to read Rainbows End. Granted, these two books have very different plotlines. But I think one reason is the way that they are read. I have a PDF file of the Public Domain saved to my computer because I don't have a iphone or kendle. But I can carry around Vernor Vinge's book where ever I go. If I head out to work or go to a resturant I can bring my bound book with me. It is harder with a computer. I don't like sitting at my computer staring at its screen to read a book. It is a different way to read and one that is not as fulfilling as reading an actual physical book. I just like cuddling up with a good book; it is just more comfortable that way.

  1. I had a hard time getting through The Public Domain for another reason. I listened to this as an audiobook, and I think that the narrator's slow, methodical delivery of the text only underscored the dense prose style of the author. It made me want to pull my hair out because of how slowly it trudged through (and kept repeating) its main points. That said, I think the book's ideas are absolutely critical. But the mode through which we experience something certainly affects how well we get interested in it. Another reason for things to have multiple formats. Some books need to be cuddled up to, and others need to be sampled and skimmed. Maybe the format you are reading it in will help you get motivated to be more efficient about how much time you spend reading it.
